The first thing I had to do was strip off all the old varnish, which is a very nasty job. If the paint stripper gets on your skin it can just eat your skin. Stripping off all that old varnish is the hardest part of this project. Rubber gloves are a must. A long sleeve shirt and jeans are good protective clothing.
You apply a sealer after you stain the furniture. Make sure the surface is smooth and then go ahead and apply the finish smoothly to prevent any streaks or bubbles.Gilding is the fixing of gold leaf to a prepared surface and rubbing it into place. Gold leaf will not tarnish: it lasts for years, giving a true gold look to any wood, metal or plaster base. The lavish and decadent lives of yester year found the need to have almost every piece of furniture that they owned gilded, really evident in the 17th and 18th centuries across the globe. Today these fine pieces still have the same allure, but for totally different reasons - being antiques.
The top. The simplest top for this cat furniture is just a wooden cap that keeps the rope from slipping off. You can buy decorative fence post caps at home centers or just cut a piece of wood about 4" x 4.5". Simply nail or screw the cap in place. If you really like your cat you could give him a cat perch by making a wooden box with inside dimensions of 14" x 14" x 3". Screw the box to the post with 3" deck screws and hot melt another piece of carpet in place. If you spray the post with catnip extract your cat will go crazy over his new post.
