John's nephew, Ralph Widdicombe, joined him as a designer, and eventually became known as the Dean of furniture design. They were to work together for 53 years until John retired in 1951. The company continued in business until May, 2002, when the Grand Rapids plant was closed and the assets purchased by L. & J.G. Stickley.
We used Fastway Couriers for a simple little box for a lock for example, but they will only take up to 30 kg and the majority of furniture would be far over 30kg. We have our own fleet of trucks and vans on the road, we have 7 vehicles on the road covering the country so all our deliveries are done through our own company.
Of course my Dads office was different. He was the boss so he got to enjoy the perks of having his own office. No boring modular office furniture in there! It seemed so big and impressive. I remember a big leather studded chair and tall wall shelves full of important looking books and figurines. Plenty of tables and chairs, and even a couch. There were always stacks of file folders and papers on his desk that made me feel like I was in a very important place. We used to hide under his desk, or behind the large plants by the window. We could imagine that we were almost anyone in that place. But usually it was enough to know that Dad would protect us from anything as dreary as ordinary work tasks. I admit, it was a charmed youth! But, oh how the times have changed!
