Most important when buying furniture for an elderly person is to remember that even though his or her eyesight might be a little less than it once was, the furniture should still be appealing to his or her taste. If your grandfather hates floral fabric, don't buy him a room full of furniture with huge magnolia blossoms on it just because you happen to like it. If you are incorporating this furniture into your living quarters, and you and the elderly person who will be sharing your space disagree on furniture tastes, do your best to get the new furniture in a complementary shade or fabric. It doesn't have to be an exact match. Use a solid blue lift chair to coordinate with your blue, burgundy and green floral sofa and loveseat. Make every effort to respect his or her taste while accommodating any special needs.
When I was small, I used to build caves inside my room in the winter. I would throw a blanket over a couple of chairs and huddle inside, imagining myself a bear in winter in my centrally heated cave. Given the biting cold that I was imagining, I would bring in a lamp for warmth. The cave was perfect until I burned myself on the lamp. I never burned myself under my kotatsu, but I did get uncomfortably warm. My new world in Japan was like my childhood, but without central heating.
Some futons come in rustic lodge furniture styles. This style is characterized by its natural and weathered appearance. Glazed and distressed wood finishes will add an aged look and turns this style into beautiful cabin rustic furniture. Other styles are modern and have a much lighter weight appearance than traditional sofas. These will be an attractive addition to a small cabin room. Futons come in all sizes -- twin, full, and queen -- and will blend into whatever space is available.
If these two tests are unclear, you may then be dealing with a varnish or synthetic finish. If the previous finish looks like it is simply worn out, you may be able apply the same finish easily.
